{"id":11564,"date":"2025-08-23T04:36:54","date_gmt":"2025-08-23T04:36:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/weeklyyoung.pk\/?p=11564"},"modified":"2025-08-23T04:36:54","modified_gmt":"2025-08-23T04:36:54","slug":"iran-europeans-agree-to-meet-as-sanctions-deadline-nears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/weeklyyoung.pk\/?p=11564","title":{"rendered":"Iran, Europeans agree to meet as sanctions deadline nears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2022 France says \u2018time running out\u2019 for Tehran nuclear talks<br \/>\n\u2022 Iranian FM Araghchi warns of snapback \u2018consequences\u2019<\/p>\n<p>TEHRAN: Iran will meet next week with Britain, France and Germany on its nuclear programme, the parties said on Friday, as the European powers warned Tehran to engage swiftly to avoid snapback sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>The Islamic republic suspended cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency in July in the wake of its 12-day war with Israel, citing the UN nuclear watchdog\u2019s failure to condemn Israeli and US strikes on its nuclear facilities.<\/p>\n<p>The European trio \u2014 parties to the landmark 2015 Iran nuclear deal \u2014 have threatened to trigger a \u201csnapback mechanism\u201d by the end of August.<\/p>\n<p>The move would reimpose sweeping UN sanctions lifted under the 2015 agreement unless Iran agrees to curb its uranium enrichment and restore cooperation with IAEA inspectors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was agreed that Iran\u2019s talks with the three European countries and the European Union would continue next Tuesday at the level of deputy foreign ministers,\u201d Iran\u2019s foreign ministry said after a phone call between Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and senior European diplomats.<\/p>\n<p>France confirmed the talks and cautioned that Iran faced a narrowing window of time. \u201cWe have just made an important call to our Iranian counterpart regarding the nuclear programme and the sanctions against Iran that we are preparing to reimpose,\u201d said French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot on X, noting he was joined on the call by his British and German counterparts and the EU\u2019s top diplomat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTime is running out. A new meeting will take place next week on this issue,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said on X that his country remained \u201ccommitted to diplomacy but time is very short\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIran needs to engage substantively in order to avoid the activation of snapback,\u201d he said. \u201cWe have been clear that we will not let the snapback of sanctions expire unless there is a verifiable and durable deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The EU\u2019s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, made a similar statement. \u201cWith the deadline for the snapback mechanism fast approaching, Iran\u2019s readiness to engage with the US is crucial. Iran must also fully cooperate\u201d with the IAEA, she said.<\/p>\n<p>It was not immediately clear where the talks, the second since the Iran-Israel war, would take place.<\/p>\n<p>Snapback \u2018consequences\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Iran and the European trio \u2014 known as the E3 \u2014 held talks in late July at the Iranian consulate in Istanbul, which Tehran described as \u201cfrank\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Iran\u2019s 12-day war with Israel derailed its nuclear negotiations with the United States and saw it suspend cooperation with the IAEA.<\/p>\n<p>The 2015 nuclear deal was aimed preventing Iran from developing an atomic bomb \u2014 an ambition it has consistently denied.<\/p>\n<p>The deal was torpedoed in 2018 when Donald Trump, during his first term as US president, unilaterally withdrew the United States from the agreement and slapped crippling sanctions on its economy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2022 France says \u2018time running out\u2019 for Tehran nuclear talks \u2022 Iranian FM Araghchi warns of snapback \u2018consequences\u2019 TEHRAN: Iran will meet next week with Britain, France and Germany on its nuclear programme, the parties said on Friday, as the European powers warned Tehran to engage swiftly to avoid snapback sanctions.
