WASHINGTON\/JERUSALEM: US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he was issuing a \u201clast warning\u201d to Hamas, saying the Palestinian group must accept a deal to release Israeli prisoners.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Israelis have accepted my terms. It is time for Hamas to accept as well. I have warned Hamas about the consequences of not accepting. This is my last warning,\u201d Donald Trump said on social media.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had some very good discussions. Good things could happen,\u201d he told reporters. \u201cI think we\u2019re going to have a deal on Gaza very soon.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told residents of Gaza City on Monday to evacuate, and the military said four soldiers were killed in the Gaza Strip when an unidentified person \u201clobbed an explosive device into their tank\u201d.<\/p>\n
In response to Trump\u2019s comments, Hamas said it was ready to \u201cimmediately sit at the negotiating table\u201d following \u201csome ideas received from the American side aimed at reaching a ceasefire agreement\u201d.<\/p>\n
In exchange for a truce, Hamas said it wanted \u201ca clear declaration of the end of the war, a full withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, and the formation of a committee of independent Palestinians to manage the Gaza Strip, which would begin its duties immediately\u201d.<\/p>\n
Hamas agreed last month to a ceasefire proposal that involved a 60-day truce and staggered prisoner releases.<\/p>\n
Israel, however, has demanded that Hamas release all the prisoners at once, disarm itself and relinquish control of Gaza, among other conditions.<\/p>\n
In Geneva, United Nations rights chief Volker Turk said he was \u201chorrified by the open use of genocidal rhetoric by senior Israeli officials\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u2018Face annihilation\u2019<\/p>\n
Israel\u2019s defence minister warned Hamas on Monday to \u201clay down your arms\u201d or \u201cface annihilation\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a final warning to Hamas: release the hostages (prisoners) and put down your weapons or Gaza will be destroyed and you will be annihilated,\u201d Defence Minister Israel Katz said on X<\/p>\n
The Israeli minister threatened that \u201ctoday, a massive hurricane will hit the skies of Gaza City\u201d, where he said the military was \u201cpreparing to expand\u201d operations.<\/p>\n
Israel has stepped up operations, levelling high-rise buildings in Gaza City which it has vowed to capture, despite mounting international pressure to stop the bombardment.<\/p>\n
\u2018Genocidal rhetoric\u2019<\/p>\n
The UN rights chief accused Israeli officials of using overt \u201cgenocidal rhetoric\u201d about Gaza and called for decisive international action to \u201cend the carnage\u201d.<\/p>\n
In a speech to the UN Human Rights Council that was criticised by Israel, Volker Turk said the occupied Palestinian territory was already \u201ca graveyard\u201d.<\/p>\n
He stressed that \u201cthe region is crying out for peace\u201d.<\/p>\n
Turk accused Israel of inflicting indescribable suffering and wholesale destruction.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am horrified by the open use of genocidal rhetoric and the disgraceful dehumanisation of Palestinians by senior Israeli officials.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFurther militarisation, occupation, annexation and oppression will only feed more violence, retribution and terror,\u201d Volker Turk warned.<\/p>\n
He insisted Israel had \u201ca legal obligation to take the steps ordered by the International Court of Justice to prevent acts of genocide, punish incitement to genocide and ensure enough aid reaches Palestinians in Gaza\u201d.<\/p>\n
The UN rights chief said the international community was \u201cfailing the people of Gaza\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhere are the decisive steps to prevent genocide,\u201d he wondered.<\/p>\n
Ravina Shamdasani, the spokeswoman for Volker Turk, said \u201cshocking and dehumanising language\u201d has been used by a number of high-level officials, stressing that \u201cthis is not a case of one senior official mouthing off\u201d.<\/p>\n
Two teens killed in Jenin<\/p>\n
The Palestinian health ministry said that the Israeli military killed two teenagers at a refugee camp in Jenin on Monday.<\/p>\n
The two victims were named by the ministry as Islam Abdel Aziz Nouh Majarmeh and Muhammad Sari Omar Masqala, both aged 14.<\/p>\n
Palestinian official news agency Wafa reported that the two boys were killed after Israeli soldiers \u201copened fire at a group of civilians who attempted to inspect their houses in the camp and retrieve some of their belongings\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
