ISLAMABAD: The Spa\u00adce and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) is integrating space-based applications into its disaster risk management framework, paving a path anchored in science and international collaboration to better prepare for natural calamities, a senior official said on Monday.<\/p>\n
The agency aims to change the country\u2019s disaster response from reactive to proactive, said Sup\u00adarco\u2019s member for tech\u00adno\u00adlogy Zafar Iqbal at the la\u00ad\u00adunch of the \u2018Space-based Disaster Manage\u00adment \u2014 Shifting Focus from Rea\u00adc\u00adtive to Proactive Approa\u00adc\u00adhes\u2019 training in Islamabad.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese tools are used to enhance early warning sys\u00adtems and support nati\u00adonal policies and authorities on disaster preparedness as mitigation and ad\u00ad\u00adaptation advance together as twin priorities,\u201d Mr Iqbal said.<\/p>\n
He stressed the importance of readiness before a crisis occurs.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe challenge before us is not only to respond to disasters after they occur, but more importantly, to strengthen preparedness and resilience before they strike,\u201d Mr Iqbal said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy harnessing satellite data, remote sensing, and geospatial tools, we can mo\u00ad\u00adnitor risks in advance, identify vulnerable areas, and support decision-makers with timely, actionable information.\u201d He added that such strategies save lives, protect infrastructure and ensure that scarce resou\u00adrces are deployed more effectively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
