{"id":14109,"date":"2025-12-13T10:23:12","date_gmt":"2025-12-13T10:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/weeklyyoung.pk\/?p=14109"},"modified":"2025-12-13T10:23:12","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T10:23:12","slug":"un-expert-decries-imrans-detention-calls-on-authorities-to-ensure-compliance-with-international-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/weeklyyoung.pk\/?p=14109","title":{"rendered":"UN expert decries Imran\u2019s detention, calls on authorities to ensure compliance with international standards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A United Nations\u2019 (UN) special rapporteur warned on Friday that PTI founder and former prime minister Imran Khan is being held in conditions that could amount to inhuman or degrading treatment, calling on Pakistani authorities to comply with international norms and standards.<\/p>\n<p>In September, his legal team approached the rapporteur to urge the Pakistani government to cease the alleged mistreatment of the couple.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister\u2019s Aide Rana Ihsan Afzal, however, dismissed the concerns of the UN rapporteur and said Imran was being kept \u201caccording to prison rules and the jail manual\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis children have access and he should schedule [a call] and put in the appropriate request. There is no issue or obstacle from the government of Pakistan,\u201d said the premier\u2019s aide.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the PTI founder is being provided facilities \u201cgreater than his rights\u201d as a B-class prisoner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has the facilities of exercise available, good food is available and ample space is also available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UN official, Alice Jill Edwards, urged Pakistan to take immediate and effective action to address reports of the 73-year-old\u2019s inhumane and undignified detention conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI call on Pakistani authorities to ensure that Khan\u2019s conditions of detention fully comply with international norms and standards,\u201d Edwards said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince his transfer to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on September 26, 2023, Imran Khan has reportedly been held for excessive periods in solitary confinement, confined for 23 hours a day in his cell, and with highly restricted access to the outside world,\u201d she said. \u201cHis cell is reportedly under constant camera surveillance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKhan\u2019s solitary confinement should be lifted without delay,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>UN special rapporteurs are independent experts mandated by the Human Rights Council.
