{"id":15185,"date":"2026-01-12T23:57:18","date_gmt":"2026-01-12T23:57:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/weeklyyoung.pk\/?p=15185"},"modified":"2026-01-12T23:57:18","modified_gmt":"2026-01-12T23:57:18","slug":"greenland-rejects-us-takeover-under-any-circumstance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/weeklyyoung.pk\/?p=15185","title":{"rendered":"Greenland rejects US takeover \u2018under any circumstance\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Greenland\u2019s government on Monday said it could not accept a US takeover of the Arctic island under \u201cany circumstance\u201d, after US President Donald Trump said that the United States would take the territory \u201cone way or the other\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has repeatedly threatened to bring the island under US control, arguing that the Danish autonomous territory is crucial for national security.<\/p>\n<p>He reiterated that the United States must own Greenland, an autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, to prevent Russia or China from occupying the strategically located and minerals-rich territory in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States has once again reiterated its desire to take over Greenland. This is something that the governing coalition in Greenland cannot accept under any circumstances,\u201d the Greenlandic government said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Trump warned that if the United States didn\u2019t take Greenland, \u201cRussia or China will, and I\u2019m not letting that happen\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The US leader said he would be open to making a deal with the Danish self-governing island, \u201cbut one way or the other, we\u2019re going to have Greenland\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement with Denmark to show their backing for Copenhagen and Greenland against Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the basis of the very positive declaration from the six Nato member states regarding Greenland, the government of Greenland will intensify efforts to ensure that the defence of Greenland is carried out within Nato,\u201d Monday\u2019s statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreenland will always be part of the Western defence alliance,\u201d the government added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll Nato member states, including the United States, have a common interest in the defence of Greenland,\u201d the island\u2019s coalition government said in a statement, adding that it can in no way accept a US takeover of Greenland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of the Danish commonwealth, Greenland is a member of Nato and the defence of Greenland must therefore be through Nato,\u201d the government said.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius said earlier on Monday that any US military takeover of Greenland would be the end of NATO.<\/p>\n<p>While Denmark has ruled Greenland for centuries, the territory has gradually been moving towards independence since 1979, a goal shared by all political parties elected to the island\u2019s parliament.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are a democratic society that makes our own decisions. And our actions are based on international law,\u201d Greenland\u2019s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen wrote on LinkedIn.<\/p>\n<p>Trump first floated the idea of a US takeover of Greenland in 2019 during his first term in office, although he faces opposition in Washington, including from within his own party.<\/p>\n<p>Denmark and other European allies have voiced shock at Trump\u2019s threats over the strategic island, which has been home to a US military base since World War II.<\/p>\n<p>A Danish colony until 1953, Greenland gained home rule 26 years later and is contemplating eventually loosening its ties with Denmark.
