Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Chairperson Senator Rubina Khalid on Monday urged those whose words may have hurt BISP beneficiaries\u2019 sentiments to apologise.<\/p>\n
While she did not specifically name anyone, the senator said this during a press conference in Islamabad after mentioning remarks by Prime Minister\u2019s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah.<\/p>\n
Speaking on Geo News\u2019 programme \u2018Capital Talk\u2019 last week, Sanaullah claimed that the BISP data was \u201cnot accurate to the extent of Punjab\u201d, alleged it was marred by corruption and remarked that the programme served no purpose other than turning people into beggars.<\/p>\n
In her press conference, Khalid said it was not right to say that BISP was turning people into beggars, explaining that the programme catered to those who worked to earn a living. But, she continued, when they need financial assistance, it is the state\u2019s responsibility to aid them without compromising their self-respect.<\/p>\n
\u201cBISP does not turn people into beggars; it prevents people from becoming one,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She then appealed to \u201call those giving such statements to abstain from doing so\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is insulting,\u201d she said. \u201cNo one has the right to insult, and I would appeal to them to apologise to [BISP beneficiary] families whose sentiments have been hurt by their words.\u201d<\/p>\n
She said while she was \u201copen to suggestions\u201d for the programme\u2019s improvement, derogatory words about it.<\/p>\n
The programme should not be \u201ctargeted for political motives\u201d, she added.<\/p>\n
Khalid said President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had full confidence in the programme, sharing further details about the programme.<\/p>\n
Moreover, she said the BISP database was the largest in the country after the National Database and Registration Authority\u2019s database.<\/p>\n
