JERUSALEM: Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has ordered the military to \u201cprepare to remain\u201d throughout the winter in the UN-patrolled buffer zone that is supposed to separate Israeli and Syrian forces on the Golan Heights.<\/p>\n
Israel seized the demilitarised zone on the strategic plateau on Sunday, just hours after rebels swept Syrian president Bashar Al Assad from power.<\/p>\n
The move drew international condemnation, including from the United Nations, although close ally the United States said on Thursday it was consistent with Israel\u2019s right to self-defence.<\/p>\n
The peacekeeping force UNDOF said in a statement on Friday it had informed Israel it was in \u201cviolation of the 1974 disengagement agreement\u201d, referring to the armistice between Syria and Israel that created the buffer zone.<\/p>\n
Since Assad\u2019s fall, the Israeli military has also launched hundreds of strikes against Syrian military sites, targeting everything from chemical weapons stores to air defences to prevent them from falling into rebel hands.<\/p>\n
The deployment in the buffer zone comes with Israeli forces still withdrawing from southern Lebanon and with its offensive in Gaza ongoing.<\/p>\n
\u201cDue to the situation in Syria, it is of critical security importance to maintain our presence at the summit of Mount Hermon, and everything must be done to ensure the (Israeli army\u2019s) readiness on-site to enable the fighters to stay there despite the challenging weather conditions,\u201d Katz\u2019s spokesman said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Vacuum on Israel\u2019s border
\nIsrael has said it seized the buffer zone to defend itself.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Benjamin Netan\u00adyahu\u2019s office said on Thursday that the collapse of Assad\u2019s rule had created a \u201cvacuum on Israel\u2019s border\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis deployment is temporary until a force that is committed to the 1974 agreement can be established and security on our border can be guaranteed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Israel captured most of the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Arab-Israel war.<\/p>\n
It held onto the territory during the 1973 war and in 1981 annexed the area in a move since recognised only by the United States.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
