{"id":4977,"date":"2025-01-23T09:58:01","date_gmt":"2025-01-23T09:58:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/weeklyyoung.pk\/?p=4977"},"modified":"2025-01-23T09:58:01","modified_gmt":"2025-01-23T09:58:01","slug":"india-tribunal-suspends-antitrust-ban-on-whatsapp-meta-data-sharing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/weeklyyoung.pk\/?p=4977","title":{"rendered":"India tribunal suspends antitrust ban on WhatsApp-Meta data sharing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Indian appeals tribunal on Thursday put on hold the antitrust authority\u2019s five-year data sharing ban between WhatsApp and owner Meta Platforms\u2019 other applications such as Facebook and Instagram for advertising purposes.<\/p>\n<p>Meta is seeking to quash the Competition Commission of India\u2019s (CCI) November directive that imposed a five-year ban on WhatsApp on sharing data with Meta entities for advertising purposes, arguing it would have a negative impact on its business in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) ordered a suspension of the ban while it hears a challenge by Meta and WhatsApp to the antitrust order.<\/p>\n<p>The ban \u201cmay lead to a collapse\u201d of WhatsApp\u2019s business model, the appeals tribunal noted.<\/p>\n<p>In its challenge to the ban, Meta told the appeals tribunal that WhatsApp may have to \u201croll back or pause\u201d some features in India and curb its ability to offer users personalised ads on Facebook and Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>A Meta spokesperson said it welcomed the interim ruling and \u201cwill evaluate next steps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Competition Commission of India did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>Under the order on Thursday, WhatsApp will have to provide an opt-out option to users from a 2021 privacy policy update in line with the November antitrust order.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Indian appeals tribunal on Thursday put on hold the antitrust authority\u2019s five-year data sharing ban between WhatsApp and owner Meta Platforms\u2019 other applications such as Facebook and Instagram for advertising purposes.
