\n\u2022 Kremlin impressed by Trump position on ending war

BRUSSELS: Blindsided Europeans warned on Thursday that a \u201cdirty deal\u201d between US President Donald Trump and Moscow on ending the Ukraine war was doomed to fail \u2014 insisting they and Kyiv must have a seat at the negotiating table.<\/p>\n
Meeting Nato partners the day after Trump revealed he had agreed to start peace talks with Russia\u2019s Vladimir Putin, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth denied it meant a betrayal of Kyiv\u2019s three-year war effort.<\/p>\n
But Trump\u2019s move stunned European allies \u2014 several of whom openly called his strategy into question.<\/p>\n
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz rejected any \u201cdictated peace\u201d and his defence minister called it \u201cregrettable\u201d that Washington was already making \u201cconcessions\u201d to the Kremlin.<\/p>\n
In a blunt address to reporters at Nato talks in Brussels, EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas insisted that no deal \u201cbehind our backs\u201d could work, as she accused Washington of \u201cappeasement\u201d towards Russia.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe shouldn\u2019t take anything off the table before the negotiations have even started because it plays to Russia\u2019s court and it is what they want,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAny quick fix is a dirty deal,\u201d she said. \u201cIt will just simply not work.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday Ukraine would not accept any bilateral agreement on its fate without Kyiv\u2019s involvement, and called for Europe to have a seat at the table in negotiations to end the war.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
