RIYADH: Saudi Arabia is spearheading urgent Arab efforts to develop a plan for Gaza\u2019s future as a counter to US President Donald Trump\u2019s ambition for a Middle East Riviera cleared of its Palestinian inhabitants, sources said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Hamas on Friday said Israel is expected to release 369 Palestinians in exchange for three Israeli prisoners on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Saudi Arabia will host the leaders of four Arab countries on Feb 20 to discuss Trump\u2019s proposal for a US takeover of Gaza, a source said.<\/p>\n
The leaders of Egypt, Jordan, Qatar and the UAE will attend the summit, to take place ahead of an Arab League meeting in Cairo one week later on the same issue. Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas may also attend.<\/p>\n
Draft ideas will be discussed at the Feb 20 meeting in Riyadh. Proposals may involve a Gulf-led reconstruction fund and a deal to sideline Hamas.<\/p>\n
Trump sparked a global outcry with his proposal for the US to \u201ctake over\u201d the Gaza Strip. Arab countries have come together in a rare united front, outraged by the idea of displacing the Palestinians.<\/p>\n
For Palestinians, any forced displacement evokes memories of the \u201cNakba\u201d, or catastrophe \u2014 the mass displacement of their ancestors during Israel\u2019s creation in 1948.<\/p>\n
Reuters spoke to 15 sources in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan and elsewhere to build a picture of the hurried efforts by Arab states to pull together existing proposals into a new plan they can sell to the US president.<\/p>\n
All the sources declined to be identified.<\/p>\n
One Arab government source said at least four proposals had already been drafted for Gaza\u2019s future, but an Egyptian proposal was now emerging as central to the Arab push for an alternative to Trump\u2019s idea.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
