{"id":5774,"date":"2025-02-20T08:46:43","date_gmt":"2025-02-20T08:46:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/weeklyyoung.pk\/?p=5774"},"modified":"2025-02-20T08:46:43","modified_gmt":"2025-02-20T08:46:43","slug":"tajikistan-to-publish-new-dress-guidelines-for-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/weeklyyoung.pk\/?p=5774","title":{"rendered":"Tajikistan to publish new dress \u2018guidelines\u2019 for women"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tajikistan said Wednesday it would publish a new book updating the country\u2019s dress \u201cguidelines\u201d for women, tightening the secular state\u2019s policing of women\u2019s clothing.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities in the Muslim-majority Central Asian nation maintain strict control over society, including issues affecting women and girls.<\/p>\n<p>The ex-Soviet country has in recent years championed \u201ctraditional\u201d Tajik attire, banning \u201cclothing alien to national culture\u201d last year, while trying to stamp out what they see as \u201cradical Islamic cultural influences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Traditional dress for women usually consists of \u0441olourful embroidered long-sleeved tunic dresses worn over loose-fitting trousers.<\/p>\n<p>An official in Tajikistan\u2019s culture ministry told AFP it had developed new \u201crecommendations on national dress for girls and women\u201d which would be set out in a book published in July.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClothing is one of the key elements of national culture, which has been left to us from our ancestors and has retained its elegance and beauty throughout the centuries,\u201d said Khurshed Nizomi, head of the ministry\u2019s cultural institutions and folk craft department.<\/p>\n<p>The book will be free at first, and will set out what women should wear \u201caccording to age\u201d, as well as in various settings such as at home, at the theatre or at ceremonial events, Nizomi said.<\/p>\n<p>Tajikistan has published similar books outlining women\u2019s dress codes before, but this one \u201cis superior to previous publications in terms of the quality of printing, the choice of photographs and texts, and historical sources,\u201d Nizomi said.<\/p>\n<p>The authorities in the officially secular country that shares a long border with Afghanistan have also sought to outlaw Islamic clothing in public life.<\/p>\n<p>President Emomali Rahmon, in power since 1992, has called the wearing of the Islamic hijab a \u201cproblem for society\u201d, with authorities calling on women to \u201cdress in the Tajik way\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The landlocked country, which shares language and cultural ties with Afghanistan, has de-facto banned the wearing of long beards to combat \u201creligious extremism\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Tajikistan has intensified its crackdown on Islamist extremism since last year, when four Tajik citizens were accused of carrying out a massacre at a concert hall near Moscow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tajikistan said Wednesday it would publish a new book updating the country\u2019s dress \u201cguidelines\u201d for women, tightening the secular state\u2019s policing of women\u2019s clothing.
