ISLAMABAD: Pakis\u00adtan and South Africa on Wednesday agreed to dee\u00adpen their defence cooperation, focusing on joint ve\u00ad\u00adntures, technology tra\u00adns\u00adfer and capacity building.<\/p>\n
The understanding was reached during the second meeting of the Pakistan-South Africa Joint Defen\u00ad\u00adce Committee (JDC) held in Islamabad from March 17-19.<\/p>\n
Defence Secretary reti\u00adred Lt Gen Muhammad Ali led the Pakistani delegati\u00adon and Dr Thobekile Gam\u00adede, acting secretary of defence, represented South Africa.<\/p>\n
Both sides discussed fu\u00ad\u00adture avenues to strengthen their partnership in def\u00ade\u00adnce innovation, cyber and sp\u00adace technologies, artificial intelligence, research and development and def\u00adence industry capacity building.<\/p>\n
Mr Ali emphasised the importance of broadening coo\u00adperation in light of eme\u00adrging global security challenges. \u201cIt is imperative to further expand this collaboration by exploring new avenues through joint ventures in defense innovation and niche technology,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
Dr Gamede conveyed South Africa\u2019s keen interest in joint ventures, technology transfer, training exchanges and exploring opportunities for defence industrial cooperation.<\/p>\n
The third round of the JDC meeting will be held in South Africa.<\/p>\n
A key milestone in the defence cooperation betw\u00adeen Pakistan and South Africa came in March 2017, when both countries signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance collaboration in defence production, technology transfer and equipment acquisition.
