Satellite-based internet provider Starlink on Friday was granted a temporary No Objection Certificate (NOC) to operate in Pakistan, according to a statement from the IT ministry.<\/p>\n
Starlink Services, owned by tech billionaire Elon Musk, is one of the most technologically advanced companies globally among those providing internet via Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.<\/p>\n
Musk confirmed in January that Starlink applied to launch internet services in Pakistan but was \u201cwaiting for approval from the government\u201d. A user on X \u2014 also owned by Musk \u2014 confirmed that Pakistan had \u201capproved Starlink\u201d.<\/p>\n
According to today\u2019s statement, IT Minister Shaza Fatima said that Starlink was granted temporary registration on the instructions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.<\/p>\n
\u201cStarlink has been issued a temporary NOC with the consensus of all security and regulatory agencies,\u201d Fatima was quoted as saying. \u201cStarlink\u2019s arrival in Pakistan will mark the formal launch of satellite internet services\u201d.<\/p>\n
The minister said that registering Starlink was \u201ca big step\u201d to improve the country\u2019s internet services and IT infrastructure in line with the PM\u2019s instructions. She added that Pakistan is \u201cmoving towards digital development\u201d under PM Shebaz\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Prime Minister had directed that the internet system in Pakistan should be improved,\u201d Fatima said. \u201cModern solutions like satellite internet will improve connectivity in the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
The minister added that Starlink\u2019s registration was a \u201cwhole of government\u201d approach and that the IT ministry consulted with the Cybercrime Agency, security agencies, PTA and Pakistan Space Activities Regulatory Board.<\/p>\n
