Iran\u2019s Revolutionary Guards have unveiled new missile systems on three strategic islands in the Gulf, saying they can target nearby \u201cenemy bases, vessels, and assets\u201d, state media reported on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The weapons were deployed on Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa near the Strait of Hormuz, a globally vital shipping lane.<\/p>\n
The Guards recently held military manoeuvres in the area.<\/p>\n
Saturday\u2019s announcement comes with Iran poised to respond to a letter from US President Donald Trump urging a resumption of nuclear talks and warning of possible military action if Iran refuses.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a tactic that we must arm\u201d the island group \u201cand make it operative\u201d, said Alireza Tangsiri, naval commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the ideological branch of Iran\u2019s military.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are capable of attacking enemy bases, vessels, and assets in the region,\u201d he told state television.<\/p>\n
The new systems \u201ccan completely destroy any target within 600 kilometres (370 miles)\u201d.<\/p>\n
On Friday, supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said US threats against Iran \u201cwill get them nowhere\u201d, and warned that \u201cif they do anything malign to the Iranian nation, they will get a hard slap\u201d.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described Trump\u2019s letter as \u201cmore of a threat\u201d but said it appeared to offer opportunities and noted that Tehran would respond \u201cin the coming days\u201d.<\/p>\n
In remarks broadcast on Friday, US Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff said Trump was trying to head off armed conflict with Iran by building trust with Tehran.<\/p>\n
He said the president\u2019s letter was not intended as a threat.<\/p>\n
