According to an article in Israel\u2019s Haaretz newspaper by an anonymous senior officer in a non-reservist brigade, Palestinians are \u201cregularly forced by soldiers to enter houses in Gaza to make sure there are no terrorists or explosives\u201d, Al Jazeera reports.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn Gaza, human shields are used by Israeli soldiers at least six times a day,\u201d the officer said in the article. He said that he served in Gaza for nine months, and first came across these procedures, called \u2018mosquito protocol\u2019, in December 2023.<\/p>\n
According to the officer, the protocol was used long before there was a shortage of dogs from the army\u2019s canine unit, Oketz, which were used for this purpose. The officer said: \u201cThis became the insane, unofficial excuse for this insane, unofficial procedure.\u201d<\/p>\n
The writer added that the army personnel referred to \u201chuman shields\u201d as \u201cshawishes\u201d.<\/p>\n
The officer stressed: \u201cToday, almost every platoon keeps a \u2018shawish\u2019, and no infantry force enters a house before a \u2018shawish\u2019 clears it. This means there are four \u2018shawishes\u2019 in a company, twelve in a battalion, and at least 36 in a brigade.
