A bride was shot dead hours before her wedding procession in Lahore on Thursday, according to a statement from the Edhi Foundation, while the victim\u2019s family alleged that her brother-in-law was the culprit.<\/p>\n
According to today\u2019s statement, the 23-year-old woman was shot in the head on Thursday morning, noting that it was the day of her wedding procession.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe police and forensic team collected evidence and launched an investigation,\u201d the statement read. \u201cAfter the police and investigative agencies completed their work, the body was shifted to the morgue by an Edhi ambulance.<\/p>\n
However, the victim\u2019s mother, Jameela Bibi, alleged that her son-in-law had \u201cmurdered the girl\u201d and that action should be taken against him.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am ready to get my daughter divorced from him (the suspect),\u201d she told Dawn.com.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the victim\u2019s uncle, Shoukat Ali, told Dawn.com that the suspect shot the girl after she went to sleep.<\/p>\n
\u201c[The suspect] threw the gun in a nearby plot,\u201d he said. \u201cHe then told us he was feeling ill and asked if he could leave the house. He pretended to be ill to flee the scene.\u201d<\/p>\n
The first information report (FIR) was registered at the Sundar Police Station in Lahore under Section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code on the mother\u2019s complaint.<\/p>\n
The FIR said her daughter was shot dead in the early hours of Thursday morning.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the mehndi, we had many guests staying over at our home,\u201d she said in the FIR.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt 5:30am on Thursday, we suddenly heard gunfire. My other daughter, brother-in-law and I saw [the suspect] running from the room with a gun in his hand. My daughter (the victim) was lying on the bed in a pool of her own blood, with blood flowing from her head,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n
Violence against women remains commonplace in Pakistan. Last month, police arrested a woman for allegedly killing her husband\u2019s second wife and dumping the body in a quarter adjacent to her house in the Liaquatabad area of Lahore.<\/p>\n
Globally, 85,000 women and girls were killed intentionally in 2023, according to a report on femicides released in November last year.<\/p>\n
The report, \u2019Femicides in 2023: Global Estimates of Intimate Partner\/Family Member Femicides \u2014 jointly produced by UN Women and UN Office for Drug and Crime \u2014 was released to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.<\/p>\n
